The mat is an aerial view of the garden with the River Mole and the North Downs running along the bottom; its elongated shape allows lots of children to sit around and reach into the centre. Painshill is an 18th Century garden with many contrasting and hidden features to surprise and mystify visitors. Reflecting this, the flaps and pockets are lined with brightly coloured and patterned fabrics, and details from Painshill's landmarks are enigmatically abstracted onto the mat. The crystal grotto is a mysterious enclosed space, its sparkling treasures revealed by peering through windows and doors by torchlight. This mat is one of five educational interactive story mats created for local museums as a part of the Rockband project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. (2.6x1.5m, 2012)
