1. Silkbackbones - blue I 30 by 74 cm £195
Part of my exhibition at The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Genome Campus, Hinxton, Cambs. All these pieces in this exhibition were inspired by elements of protein structure. This print represents a long strand of silk fibres and shows the many weak hydrogen bonds between each protein silk molecule. It is these weak bonds that give silk fibres their great strength. The original textile was made almost entirely from silk, with just a small amount of copper shim added ( to represent the metal ions found at the active sites of enzymes).
