Colourful and textured, with special pockets for characters and props. Commissioned by a professional storyteller, who wanted suggestions of landscapes such as river, sea, meadow, forest and street, but with a richness of ambiguity to stimulate children's imaginations and allow reinterpretation to fit different stories. This was my first story mat, and collaborating with an experienced storyteller was invaluable; understanding how she worked and what she wanted from the story mat, discussing ideas and possibilities, developing techniques to bring the mat to life.
