Darwin story mat, Sedgwick Museum, University of Cambridge

Dangerous rocks in the Magellan Strait observed by Darwin.
Dangerous rocks in the Magellan Strait observed by Darwin.
This mat was commissioned for the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth, exploring his geological discoveries from his voyage on the Beagle, and how these led to his later theories. The Education Officer wanted subtle hints of 'activity and exploration' and to incorporate landscapes that would inspire awe and wonder. This mat developed ideas and techniques from my first story mat (storyteller mat) with single and multi-layered flaps and richer textures. (1.8x1.8m, 2009)
